Trevor Colden Chips Deck
My Role
Having spent most of my life in the Southern California skate scene, I’m fortunate to call some of the sports’ top professional athletes friends. One of my friends, Trevor Colden, was turning pro for Skate Mental and was being awarded his first pro model under the label.
I pitched an idea for a graphic that combined his name with a brand of chips that he was notorious for consuming. In a sort of “you are what you eat” concept.
Artwork Production
To tie the graphic in deeper with the brand, I decided to build a typeface based upon the old Skate Mental logo. Only having letters from the past logo to sample from, I had to create the letters “C”, “O”, and “D” from scratch while also keeping them aesthetically cohesive with the rest of the lettering.
One large bag of Doritos Spicy Nacho tortilla chips and 3 hours of meticulous sculpting and photographing yielded the final version.
“The Dorito graphic, my friend Alex did. I had no idea he was even doing the graphic, ‘cause he’s really good at designing stuff like that on the computer and he had sent me that exact mock up and I was like, “Oh my God, this is f****n’ amazing.” I showed Staba and immediately he was like, “Yeah, let’s do it. How much does he want for it?””
“Skateboarders aren’t known for their foodie tendencies—many subsist on $0.99 slices of pizza and tap water—but that hasn’t stopped anyone from putting tasty grub on the bottom of a deck. And while this trend has resulted in some uninspired parodies of well-known corporate branding, it’s also given us boards worthy of our walls.”
